Answering an SOS
Sandvik Mining Africa recently teamed up with energy giant Areva Namibia to donate a new ambulance to St Gabriel’s Ambulance Trust in the town of Arandis and surrounding areas in western Namibia.
The 50,000 US dollar ambulance, named Desert Rose, is believed to be the community’s first ambulance since it was established in 1975. The emergency vehicle will cut response times in half along a nearby road notorious for accidents. In the past, ambulances were sent from Rio Tinto’s Rössing Uranium Mine or dispatched from towns as far as an hour away. Petrina Haingura, Namibia’s deputy minister of health and social services, officiated at the handover ceremony in June.
