Breaking Ground: Romania’s first private salt mine with great future prospects
In the heart of Transylvania, Romania, lies a groundbreaking venture that has redefined the salt mining industry in Romania. Nestled just 12 kilometers from Dej, the Romanian mining company Salzbergwerk Ressourcen und Investitionen (SRL) started a pioneering project to establish the first private salt mine in the country. This project broke ground and started with excavation in 2022, marking a significant milestone in Romania’s salt-mining industry.
A new era of mining technology
“We executed the exploration program in the period 2014 to 2017, and we started to excavate in 2022,” shares Bogdan Nita, one of the mine’s owners, highlighting the meticulous planning and execution that led to the project’s early success.
The integration of cutting-edge technology from Sandvik has been instrumental in streamlining mining operations and maximizing productivity. “With this new technology, it’s easier, safer, and faster to work,” affirms Daniel Sandu, the Technical Supervisory Manager in the mine.
Enhancing efficiency through collaboration
Sandvik’s commitment to providing not just state-of-the-art equipment but also comprehensive support has been very important in driving operational efficiency. “The machine is very well built and it’s very easy to operate. You don’t need too many people,” Daniel Sandu continues, emphasizing the user-friendly design and functionality of the Sandvik MT520 roadheader.
Regular visits by Sandvik technicians ensure that the machinery operates at its best, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity. “The guys from Sandvik come here around twice a month to check the machine and see that everything is in order. It’s a good machine. We haven’t had any problems,” shares Anca Lungescu, Logistic Director at site, highlighting the proactive approach to customer services adopted by Sandvik.
Sustainable mining practices and community engagement
Beyond operational excellence, the Romanian salt mine is committed to sustainable practices and community engagement. “Safety is important. As a manager, I put safety first, and the Sandvik MT520 is easier to work with,” asserts Cornel Hirtop, Production Director, underscoring the importance of prioritizing safety in mining operations.
Furthermore, the mine owners are actively involved in initiatives aimed at supporting the local community. One such initiative involves the construction of a road passing around the village to minimize the number of trucks passing through the village daily. This not only reduces traffic congestion but also minimizes the impact on the local residents.
Looking towards the future
As discussions are started regarding the acquisition of additional machinery from Sandvik, it is evident that the partnership is ready for continued growth and success. “We are talking with Sandvik to buy another machine because we are very pleased with this one, and it functions well,” shares Bogdan Nita, highlighting the mutual trust and collaboration between the two companies.
The success story of the Romanian salt mine stands as a testament to the transformative power of innovation and collaboration. By prioritizing safety, productivity, and environmental responsibility, Sandvik and the Romanian salt mine are not just shaping the present but also paving the way for a brighter future in the mining industry.
Key project facts:
- Location: Nireș, Transylvania, Romania
- Concentration of NaCl in salt: 99%
- Current monthly mine production capacity: over 22,000 tons
- Machinery capacity: 1,500 tons per day (in a 10 hrs shift)
- Environmental initiatives: construction of a road to avoid truck traffic through the nearby village
In conclusion, the successful collaboration between Sandvik and the Romanian salt mine serves as a shining example of how strategic partnerships and innovative solutions can drive progress and prosperity in the mining sector. As the world continues to evolve, such partnerships will undoubtedly play an important role in shaping the future of mining, ensuring sustainability, efficiency, and continued growth.
