After transitioning from a combined surface and underground operation to a fully underground mine, Agnico Eagle’s Pinos Altos was faced with a dilemma: how could the mine recover the high-quality ore that lay in the crown pillar – the section that lies between the bottom of the open pit and the upper level of the underground – without exposing employees to additional safety risks?
