Gold-mining bacterium discovered

A biochemistry team from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, has discovered a species of bacterium that can turn water-soluble gold into its solid form.

A molecule in Delftia acidovorans that extracts and condenses tiny pieces of gold could someday be used to collect the precious metal from mine waste piles.
