After successful trials in Australia, Sandvik’s new Mechanical Dynamic rockbolt is ready to challenge the traditional resin and cement grouted bolt market.

Ready, steady, bolt in the mine

After two years of successful trials in Australia, the new Mechanical Dynamic (MD) rockbolt from Sandvik Mining is ready to challenge the traditional resin and cement grouted bolt market.

The MD permanent rockbolt is less sensitive to poor ground conditions, such as the weak rock mass where it was tested and tweaked at Fosterville, the largest gold mine in the state of Victoria. Similar to a standard friction bolt, the MD bolt is installed in one quick and easy pass. A simple twist anchors it once it’s in place.

“Installation is so quick and easy compared to other types of ground support,” says Peter Young, product manager. “There’s no chemical insertion or grout injection, and no returning to tension up the rebar. Combined, it saves money and provides better support.”

The galvanized bolts come in 2.4-metre and 3-metre lengths and are rated to hold 30 tonnes. The bolts are particularly suitable for moving ground conditions.
